It’s an HP Pavilion DV8233CL that got water on it from a leaking ceiling. When I noticed the water it was running off wall power and was still on. I immediately turned it off and unplugged it but forgot to also remove the battery. This is what it’s doing now:
Situation 1: It won’t cold boot from the battery. Instead when the power button gets pushed the shortcut buttons light up and the back light will come on but all it does is leak on the right side of the screen and make about a quarter of the screen white, the rest is still black. If I plug it into the wall at this stage the back light leakage disappears, the fan briefly spins up and the charging light blinks. Nothing happens when the power button gets pushed. If I unplug it from the wall nothing changes. The charge light still flashes.
Situation 2: If the battery is installed and I plug it into the wall before the power button ever has been pushed, the result is the as if the power button had been pushed with just the battery installed. The shortcut lights light up and the charge light flashes.
Situation 3: If it’s plugged into the wall BEFORE the battery is installed and then the battery gets installed the result is that the charge light comes on and is solid, as though it’s charging. And that’s all that happens. No other lights. So what’s happening is what you’d usually expect when the computer is off with battery installed and plugged into the wall. When you now push the power button the computer comes on and runs normally. And the power manager shows that the battery is charging. If you now unplug it from the wall it WILL keep on running on battery power alone. You can even restart it and it will warm boot just from the battery. But if you turn it off completely and wait a few seconds it will once again NOT boot from the battery.
I removed the motherboard and an electronics tech friend checked as much of the power circuity as he could and all capacitors, fuses, etc behaves as expected.
Do you guys have any input other than telling me the board is shot and to replace it? The keyboard doesn’t work, either, but that’s expected since it got all the water on it.
I tried the power button reset method but it didn’t accomplish anything.
