How do I prep for catastrophe?

I’ve noticed some bad things are happening in America. The world is so screwed up. I don’t want to go overboard like the Doomsday Preppers but I do want to have a little stuff put away for preparation for a disaster. There’s me and about 14 more people I’m planning for. The majority of us are men and we’ve been outdoors all our lives. 3 of us (including myself) have military training and we can spend weeks outside. Really the only weapons we have are shotguns and hunting rifles. We also have my ACU uniforms from the Army and hunting camouflagee. Most of us live outside city limits and are capable of “bugging out”. We want to have our stuff done by March of 2013 due to scary situations in the world we have seen first hand and in the news. It seems like the most realistic scenarios would be a financial downfall, war, or natural disaster. I have more of a military like mindset from doing infantry training in the Army. We see the importance of the so called “bug out bag” and equipment but we really aren’t sure what needs to be in it or what we need period. Along with infantry training I’ve done MMA and police training. We don’t want to be crazy we only want to survive and if nessecary (highly unlikely) go on the offensive in case of a war on American soil against a foreign enemy. Is there anyone out there who could tell us what we might need or could give some advice?

Chosen Answer:

prioritise prioritise. Different terrains demand different gear. In the desert you really want water, In the ungle you want water diinfection. With military experience im sure you see the importance of good ole H20. So water and water purification should be on the list. Now the way you asked this you will have 2 kits kind of. The mobile GTHOOD (get the hell out of dodge) kit witch would be the BOB and the hunker down kit. Hunker down supplies to me would mean at least 2 55 gal drums of water. 55 for drinking and 55 for use. A good amount of non perishable food, and such. Now in a economical meltdown, civil unrest, etc if you hunker down home defense should a high priority. So i say a rifle for while theyre outside and the good ole 12 guage if they get in. Buck shot is a killer. look what it does to deer. so food, water, protection. theyres the asis without “going overboard” by maye building a safe room or a bunker. BOB. You should priortise your personal needs, and then decide what you need and dont. I like to think of gear selection this way. Unless it is most important (like to me a ferro rod or lighter) try to think of at least 3 uses for each piece of gear. With fire devices to me it isnt the device itself i look at in terms of use, but rather the fire. So you will need what you have in home prep for your BOB just on a smaller scale. Along with, fishing kit, fire devices, snare wire, first aid kit, water and water purification, food, And so on. Check out offgridsurvival.com they give you a complete list of items that should be in a BO bag, along with all kinds of tips and tricks in prepping and so on. Also. it is recomended to grab a gun if you have to bug out.
